Skinny models could be banned from fashion shows and magazines under a major change of the industry.

Diets for rapid weight loss and cosmetic surgery (整容) advertisements will also be removed from magazines, while clothing labels will be asked to offer a wide range of sizes under a new industry code of conduct (规范).

Youth Minister Kate Ellis will today introduce a new body image (形象) award to be given to magazines, modeling agencies and fashion labels that meet the following criteria:

– Say when images have been changed and stop changing them in a way that changes a person’s body shape.

– Only use models aged 16 or older to model adult clothes.

– The end of the use of models who are very thin – or male models who are very well built.

– Providing clothing in a wide variety of sizes in shops to reflect the demand from customers.

– Using a broad range of body shapes, sizes and ethnicities (民族) in advertising.

– Not promoting rapid weight loss, cosmetic surgery, too much exercising or any advertisements or editorial content that may promote a negative body image.

“Body image is an issue that we must take seriously because it is affecting the health and happiness of substantial (相当多的) sections of our community,” Ms Ellis said.

A group of health and academic experts will spend the next six months working out the criteria that organizations have to meet.

The Government has also given another $500,000 to develop new education programs with the help of eating-disorder group The Butterfly Foundation.

The school program will see 2500 educators trained to teach 100,000 students aged between eight and 18 about positive body image.

The code has already received the approval of teenage magazine Girlfriend, and Ms Ellis’ office is currently discussing the code with leading modeling agencies.

The Australian Women’s Weekly editor in chief Helen McCabe said her magazine would begin identifying digitally changed photographs of sports and entertainment stars. Ms McCabe said readers wanted published images of women to be more realistic.

“Keep out or I’ll chase you out! This is my property!”

You hear this every spring. It is a long musical sound – a birdsong! Birds use their songs to communicate different messages to one another. People who study bird sounds are learning their meanings.

Usually it is the male that sings. Early in spring he sings to say that he has picked out a piece of property. He sings to attract a female of his same kind. Together they will raise a family in his territory (领地). He sings to tell all other birds of his kind to keep out.

Each kind of bird has its own type of song. Cardinals sing something that sounds a little like “What cheer, cheer, cheer.” Towhees sing, “Drink your tea.”

Most of the time birds pay attention only to the songs of birds of their own kind. Cardinals answer cardinals, and song sparrows answer song sparrows. A cardinal knows that a song sparrow will not try to steal its mate. So you can see one reason why a cardinal may chase away another cardinal but will not bother a song sparrow.

Most different kinds of birds eat different things. To find enough to eat, a bird needs a big piece of land to search in. Many kinds of birds have some way of dividing up the land into territories. Song sparrows, cardinals, ovenbirds, and white-throated sparrows are some of the birds that have territorial systems.

Especially in early spring, birds work out the boundaries between their territories by singing “keep out” threats and by chasing and fighting each other. The birds continue singing to tell females that they have set up territories. Neighboring birds seem to agree that there are make-believe fences between their pieces of property. Then they do not have to waste energy chasing each other instead of taking care of their young.

Scientists guessed that some birds could recognize their neighbors by small differences in their songs. Two scientists who studied white-throated sparrows found that these birds can even tell the difference between songs of individual birds of their own kind. White-throated sparrows have songs that seem to say “I’m your neighbor” or “I’m a stranger” or “I’m your neighbor to the west.” Other kinds of birds could tell neighbors from strangers by their songs, too.

A. they don’t need to fight or chase each other

B. they often work together against threats

C. they build up fences to protect their property

D. they find a big piece of land to search for food

8. What can we conclude from the article?

A. Male birds use their songs to communicate more than females.

B. Scientists have learned the meanings of all white-throated sparrows sing.

C. Not all birds can recognize their neighbors by small differences in their songs.

D. White-throated sparrows are the smartest birds the scientists ever found.

Social networking isn’t only for the under 40s. More than 25 percent of Americans 50 years and older stay connected using sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, according to new research.

“The latest data tells us that more and more social networking is becoming a part of everyday life for Americans 50 plus,” said Kevin Donnellan, the chief communications officer at AARP, which released the report.

Nearly a quarter of older Americans are on Facebook and 73 percent said they use it to stay in touch with relatives, but not just their children and grandchildren. “They are using the Internet to keep up with the world and the people who are important to them,” said Jean Koppen, the author of the report. She added that older adults are also on Facebook to stay connected, not only with their family, but with their friends and those in the same age group. Almost 50 percent of older adults were introduced to the social networking sites by a family member, mainly a child or grandchild. “Just under one-fifth of adults aged 50 and older say they do not use the Internet,” according to the report.

The findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,863 adults. In addition to keeping up on Facebook and Twitter older adults are also aware of the latest technology. Eighty-three percent had heard about the Apple iPad and 11 percent intended to buy one.

If you feel at present that you don’t have enough friends in your life, one reason may be that you have let yourself become too busy to make time for the relationships you already have. Starting and keeping friendship require effort and commitment.

Many of us let our lives become so busy with work and other commitments that we don’t get around to scheduling time for pleasure and renewal (叙旧) with the friends, relatives and acquaintances we already have.

Making the effort to call your friends more regularly and to accept more of the invitations you receive from others can improve your social life in a hurry!

Are there any people you could call right now and be assured of a pleasant welcome? Are there people that you could count on to help you in time of difficulty? Can you have close talks with them? Do you have fun when you are together? Are you happy to have them in your life?

If you haven’t seen much of them lately, is it because you have become too busy? Have you grown apart? Was there an argument?

If the main reason you haven’t been getting together with the people you already know is that you have gotten too busy, take a good look at how you spend your time. Compare it with your real values and priorities (优先考虑的事) in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life that you want?

If you have become too busy for friends, why has this happened? Are you seeking material toys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings? Have you allowed your time to be over-committed because you never say ‘‘No” to anyone? Do you insist on doing things yourself that could be delegated to others? If so, why? Do you believe that everything depends on you?

Examine whether the way you are now spending your time accurately reflects your deepest values and priorities. Make sure that you schedule adequate time for the things that are truly most important to you.

If you really want to keep friends in your life, make a space in your schedule, and a space in your heart for them.

17. In this passage the author mainly discusses ______.

A. how to balance friendship and work

B. how to spend our spare time

C. whether we should keep friendship

D. whether we should invite friends to dinner

18. Which of the following doesn’t indicate a good relationship?

A. You have someone to count on when you are in trouble.

B. You have someone to have close talks with.

C. You feel depressed with others in life.

D. You have fun when you are with someone.

19. What does the underlined word “delegated” probably mean?

A. appointed B. replaced C. declined D. handled

20. The reason why you have become too busy for friends may be the following except that ______.

A. you spend too much time seeking material toys in your life

B. you feel it difficult to keep friendship

C. you stick to doing everything all by yourself

D. you never refuse whatever other people ask you to do

21. Which would be the best title for the text?
