(北京、海南、宁夏卷)七选五补全短文:

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious. They are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. They often experience anxious thought: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid?

1 Shy people need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. They feel it confirms their weaknesses. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliments because they believe they are unworthy of praise. It’s clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

2 Fortunately, people can overcome shyness by making a determined and patient effort. If you are shy, here are some helpful tips toward building self-confidence and overcoming that shyness.

* Recognize your personal strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has both. As self-acceptance grows, shyness naturally diminishes.

* Set reasonable goals. If you are nervous about being with a group of strangers at a party, for example, don’t feel that you must talk with everyone. Concentrate on talking to just one or two people. You’ll feel more comfortable.

* There are numerous approaches to all issues. Few options are completely right or wrong. 3

* Practice being in social occasions. Don’t separate yourself from people. Try making one acquaintance at a time; eventually you will be able socialize in large groups with skill and self-assurance.

* Accept criticism in a thoughtful and measured way. 4 If, for example, a friend complains about your cooking, accept it as a comment on your cooking, not on you as a person. Be assured that you are still good friends, even if your cooking could improve.

Each of us is a unique, valuable individual. We are interesting in our special ways. 5 Let’s not allow our shyness to prevent us from leading a rich and fulfilling life.

A. Do not interpret it as a personal attack.

B. Don’t be afraid to speak up and give your point of view.

C. Do not associate with people who make you feel inadequate.

D. So can shyness be “cured”, or at least reduced?

E. It’s obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people negatively.

F. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential.

G. As shy people have low self-esteem, they are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others.

(江苏、安徽、湖南卷)阅读填空:

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Personal characteristics play an important role in the development of a person’s intelligence. But people fail to realize the importance of training these factors in young people.

So-called “non-intelligence factors” include a person’s feelings, will, motivation, interests and habits. After a 30-year study, American psychologists found out that the main cause of differences in intelligence was not intelligence itself, but non-intelligence factors including the desire to learn, willpower and self-confidence.

Studies have shown that while many people recognize the need for definite goals, a strong will and good learning habits, quite a number of teachers and parents don’t pay much attention to cultivating these factors.

Some parents are greatly worried when their children fail to do well in their studies. They blame either genetic factors or laziness, but often do not consider these non-intelligence factors. At the same time, some teachers don’t question why students do poorly. They simply give them more courses and exercises, or else criticize or laugh at them. As a result, students lose self-confidence. Some of them feel defeated and give themselves up as hopeless. Others may go astray (歧途) because they are sick of learning. An investigation into more than 1,000 middle school students in Shanghai suggested that 46.5 per cent of them were afraid of learning because of examinations, 36.4 per cent lacked persistence, initiative (主动) and consciousness, and 10.3 per cent said they were sick of learning .

It is obvious that the lack of cultivation of non-intelligence factors has been a major obstacle to developing intelligence in teenagers. It can cause an imbalance between physiological and psychological development among a few students.

If we don’t start now to strengthen cultivation of non-intelligence factors, this will not only affect the development teenagers’ intelligence, but also the quality of a whole generation. Some experts have put forward suggestions about how to cultivate students’ non-intelligence factors. Parents and teachers should fully understand teenage psychology. On this basis, they can help them to pursue the objectives of learning, appeal to their interests and toughen their willpower.

Definition of non-intelligenceIt refers to personal __1__ such as one’s feelings, will, motivation, interests and habits.
Discovery of the 30-year study __2__ factors rather than intelligence itself play an essential role in intelligence.
__3__ existing in the development of students’ intelligenceThe importance of non-intelligence factors is __4__ .

Instead of inquiring into the true reasons, some teachers simply give students more assignments.
__6__ of a lack of cultivation of non-intelligence factorsSome students become __7__ and feel defeated.
Some students become sick of learning and may go astray.
A high percentage of students surveyed in Shanghai showed a lack of __8__ and initiative.

(山东、天津、湖南、上海、江西卷)阅读表达:

阅读下面短文并回答问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

London is one of the most watched cities on the planet. Like Denver and Colorado in the United States, London has closed circuit television (CCTV, 闭路电视监控) cameras all over the city. These cameras recorded many of the riots (骚乱) that broke out in early August.

After the riots, the police could look through 30 pictures per second from the CCTV system. They singled out people who they believed had started the riots. The pictures were then put on the Internet, television and in the newspaper. Many rioters ______________ in this way.

Researchers at Kingston University have recently developed a smart CCTV system. One person holding a gun can be followed by a series of cameras. These cameras “learn” to recognize unusual public behavior. For example, when a riot or crime happens, people often move quickly and in crowds. If somebody pulls out a gun, people will run in different directions. All of these movements can be picked up by a computer connected to the camera, according to Professor James Orwell of Kingston University.

The computer software collects all the videos from before and after the crime. This means police can build a full history of one person’s movements.

“If a window was smashed (砸碎) and shop looted (抢劫) in a town center street, the technology would trace back to see who smashed the window and then follow his steps to see when and where he entered the town center, ” Orwell told the BBC. “The technology would also trace where the man had gone after he left the shop. ”

Some people are afraid that the system might be used by the government to follow political protesters or even ordinary people in day-to-day life. They think it is a serious violation (侵犯) of privacy.

But the developers of this technology and the police promise that it will only focus on law breakers. A key part of the system is that the computer deletes video data automatically. This means it works more efficiently, and images of innocent people are removed.
