Sacrifice and a pizza

“THINK ‘chicken pizza’,” said our tour guide Pepe to help us remember the name of the site. We all laughed, glad of his help. Not only is “Chichén Itzá” a bit of a mouthful – even more of a mouthful than a pizza, you might say. We had also been to a lot of Maya temples (玛雅古庙) already on our holiday in Yucatan on the southeastern tip of Mexico. We had visited Tulum by the sea, cycled through the ruins of Coba, and climbed the pyramid (金字塔) of Uxmal. Yucatan is full of reminders (纪念物) of the 5th- to 15th-century Maya and Maya-Toltec civilizations (文明), and trying to sort out all our memories was going to be a challenge.
