Faster than sound: Austrian pilot Felix Baumgartner became the first man to break the sound barrier in a free-fall jump from the edge of space. On Oct 14, he leaped from a capsule floating more than 39km above the Earth’s surface, reaching a top speed of 1,342km per hour. After a free fall of over four minutes, Baumgartner opened his parachute (降落伞) and floated down into the New Mexico desert. He said traveling faster than sound is “hard to describe because you don’t feel it”. The pressurized suit prevented him from feeling the rushing air or even the loud noise caused by breaking the sound barrier.Afp
