The China Youth Development Report 2013 shows that Beijing is home to up to 160,000 “ant tribe” members. The expression “ant tribe” refers to low-income college graduates who live in big cities in the hope of building a bright future. They earn an average salary of 4,133 yuan a month, and more than 70 percent of them have to make do with less than 10 square meters of living space.
