A move praised by many as a responsible and considerate idea that could save lives in Nanjing has now drawn more controversy than expected. Early last month, the child welfare agency in Nanjing installed a “safe island” at its gate, a room where people who abandon babies at the agency can put them in to keep them warm and safe at night.
