I have met many left-handed people in the US. Being left-handed here is 1 , but in my home country lots of people treat it as a disability. Is left-handedness really a disability? Or is it just a(n) 2 difference?

Cultural attitudes toward “difference”

I used to think that left-handed people were disabled. I thought the right hand was the only correct hand for writing, and I 3 left-handed people as somehow wrong.

Chinese culture tends to 4 people to be part of the majority rather than the minority. We have famous old 5 about how tall trees are cut down and singing birds are shot, suggesting that differences cause 6 and individuals should try to integrate (融入). This attitude 7 individuality. Thus, a social bias (偏见) against left-handedness is 8 in China.

What is disability? What is difference?

People at my US university 9 changed my view. In the US, many of my professors do their daily 10 with their left hands. Many of my classmates do the same. But all of them are incredibly 11 people! In fact, four out of the past five American presidents have been lefties (左撇子).

Coming to the US has changed the 12 I take toward all “disabilities”. In Helen Keller’s autobiography (自传), she 13 her blindness and deafness as “differences” rather than “disabilities”. Nowadays, disabled people like her can live a perfectly 14 life. So shouldn’t we treat them as normal? This question is worthy of serious 15 whether you’re in China or the US.

Finding the middle ground

I had a discussion with a left-handed professor, asking her 16 it was that there were so many more lefties in the US than I knew in China.

She suggested that maybe Chinese children are expected to take 17 from society, while US children are encouraged to be unique.

We both agreed that a middle ground should be found between these two 18 : on the one hand, society should help people 19 positively; on the other, people should be allowed their unique 20 , which shouldn’t be regarded as disabilities but rather as differences.
