The Beijing Youth Daily has reported that only about 3,000 traditional siheyuan, or courtyard houses - the typical residential unit in old Beijing - remain in the Chinese capital. In their *heyday during the *reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing *Dynasty, there were more than 40,000 such courtyards in the ancient capital.
