Earn respect

GOOD morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today my topic is respect. Just a few months ago, I went to a children’s welfare home. And there I met a girl with mental retardation (智力发育迟缓). All of the beautiful and comforting words were already prepared in my mind. And yet, out of my expectation, the little girl didn’t think of herself as different from the other kids. She shared with me loads of funny experiences at her school. Not until the very moment that I saw the sunshine-like smile and enchanting (迷人的) confidence on her face did I realize that even for the underprivileged (弱势的), pity is not what they really want, but respect is. They want to be treated with equality, not the smiles of people who feel like they are saints (道德高尚的人). In fact, you are already looking down on them if you feel like one.
