French lawmakers passed a law late last month aimed at helping small bookstores. Unofficially known as the “anti-Amazon” law, the bill bans large online retailers, including Amazon, from giving buyers free delivery on discounted books. This was not the first time the French have taken legal measures to protect their beloved little neighborhood bookstores. In the early 1980s, they introduced fixed prices on books to help smaller bookstores compete against large chains. Ever since then, similar laws have cropped up all over Europe — including in Italy, Portugal, Spain and Germany.
