AFTER studying Chinese for two years in the United States, I had some idea about what to expect on my recent Confucius Institute-sponsored (孔子学院赞助的) trip to China with six other students. But China was friendlier, bigger, more international and altogether more impressive than I had expected. Some things seemed very strange, but we soon learned that we have much more in common with teenagers here than most Americans would think.
