WHEN Americans are asked to pick the nation’s greatest president, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) is always ranked among the most popular ones. Lincoln was the 16th US president, serving from 1861-1865. He is well known for leading the US during the Civil War, freeing the slaves, restoring the Union, and signing the Emancipation Proclamation (《解放黑人奴隶宣言》).
