THE 21st Oxford Conference on the Teaching of Literature will be held April 1 to 7, 2006, at Oxford University, UK.

The Oxford Conference offers an unrivalled opportunity to establish relationships with people involved in literature teaching at upper secondary and university levels from around the world. Its aim is to help bridge gaps between the two levels of education and to bring practitioners and policy makers together to work towards the same goals. Participants will have the opportunity to broaden the scope of their pedagogy and approaches.

Oxford 2006 will investigate what it means to teach an increasingly international English language and literature, and will also consider the contribution that literature can make to intercultural awareness. It will also examine the role of translation in intercultural understanding. Two key critical and pedagogical questions will be discussed in depth: 1.What are the theoretical and critical implications of the New World Englishes for contemporary readers? 2.What are the implications concerning text selection and teaching approaches?

Expected contributors include the following: Elleke Boehmer, professor of literatures in English, Royal Holloway College, University of London; Peter Childs, professor of English Studies and deputy head, School of Humanities, University of Gloucestershire; Robert Eaglestone, senior lecturer, Royal Holloway College, University of London; Sean Matthews, lecturer, School of English studies, University of Nottingham and Co-Chair of the Oxford Conference in 2004 and 2005.

There will be opportunities to hear those eminent scholars and writers read and discuss their work. Participants are strongly encouraged to share their experiences and teaching contexts throughout the conference. The purpose is to establish approaches for their use in the classroom.
