Background information
International Reading Association (IRA) was founded in 1956 as a professional organization for those involved in teaching reading to learners of all ages. Its members are dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by: improving the quality of reading instruction; disseminating research and information about reading and encouraging lifetime reading habits. For 50 years, the IRA has been a professional home for those who help others learn to read. Nearly 100 countries are involved in this.
