WHILE waiting for a bus out of Plainview, Texas, American author Poe Ballantine goes grocery shopping. He buys a bag of bagels, four bananas, two cans of tuna, one can of fish steaks, cream cheese and a box of Little Debbie brownies – "enough food for three days", he writes in his most recent collection of essays, 501 Minutes to Christ (2007).
