FOUNDED in 1883, the Modern Language Association (MLA) of America provides opportunities for its members to share their scholarly findings and teaching experiences with colleagues and to discuss trends in the academy.

The MLA currently has over 30,000 members in 100 countries. MLA members host an annual convention and other meetings, work with related organizations, and sustain one of the finest publishing programs in the humanities. For over a hundred years, members have worked to strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature. There are 134 divisions and discussion groups for the specialized scholarly and teaching interests of members.

Membership categories

* New members, regardless of income, are entitled to a $35 annual dues rate in their first year of membership in the association.

* Graduate students engaged in courses of study leading to degrees in the fields of modern languages and literatures may for a maximum of seven years become student members at a $20 annual dues rate.

* Joint membership is open to two individuals sharing the same household. To determine the joint-membership dues payment, add $20 to the dues category of the member with the higher income.

Applications for 2009 membership will be accepted through June 30, 2009.

Publications

* MLA International Bibliography provides a classified listing and subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics.

* The MLA Handbook is the association’s guide for undergraduate and high school students on the preparation of research papers.
