THE mainland is "planning" a cross-Straits rail link with Taipei, Railway Minister Liu Zhijun said last week. The line would go via Fuzhou, capital of Fujian province, and be part of the network that connects Taiwan and the mainland, Liu said. At a meeting on the sidelines of the National People's Congress, Lu Zhangong, chief of Fujian's Communist Party Committee, also proposed a rail link between Xiamen in Fujian and Kaohsiung, on Taiwan. The ministry has increased railway construction in coastal Fujian, and plans 6,000 km of railway lines there by 2015, at a total cost of 350 billion yuan.
