One-subject schools

Two of China’s most popular showbiz stars, director Feng Xiaogang and actor Zhang Guoli, *raised eyebrows recently when they poked fun at a TV talent show contestant, a student of communication at China Agriculture University. What is a student at a university of agriculture doing by studying communication? they asked. Their words *elicited loud laughs from the audience as well as demands for an apology from the university’s students. The students have accused the two celebrities of *discriminating against them, sounding as if students at the university should only do agriculture-related learning and research. However, commentator Cheng Zhenwei asked a similar question on rednet.com: Why would the university build a non-agriculture department anyway? A public university receiving large amounts of funding from the government and with strong ties to the Ministry of Agriculture should focus on what it is best at instead of trying to build itself into an all-around university with all sorts of subjects, according to Cheng. The *controversy reflects a bigger problem with the development and management of Chinese universities, according to Cheng.
