Living in the floating cities: As climate change threatens many inland urban areas, many countries are opting for (选择) urbanization (城市化) of the seas. Architects Juan Manuel Prieto and Clara Focaccia recently showed their model of a floating city in the middle of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Named “Polimeropolis”, the city was proposed as a series of urban sites in the form of rings. Each site is to enclose a big oceanic lagoon (泄湖), leaving the surface garbage outside. Meanwhile, they could generate clean electricity and water on-site using renewable systems. Designed as mixed-use urban areas, Polimeropolis would house around 4,000 residents and host commercial areas for leisure. “It not only addresses the problems caused by the overproduction of garbage, but also creates a new ecosystem and way of life,” noted Juan Manuel Prieto.
