SHAKESPEARE wrote a number of Roman plays, but this one is the most famous. It is a popular piece, but to understand its popularity one must understand the iconic (标志性的) status of the Roman leader Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44 BC) in Western culture. Caesar was great because he expanded Roman territory (领土) and made it stronger against its enemies. He also made important constitutional (宪法的) changes.
