Step 2 Read for details:教师通过引导学生read between the lines及read beyond the lines,设置问题链,帮助学生获取和梳理文本信息并启发学生发表自己的见解和观点。教师设计的问题链如下:①What was in the old man’s mind the first time he moved the fish? ②Was he afraid in face of the strong and huge fish? What did he say to himself? ③How many times does the sentence “He tried it again.” appear in the last three paragraphs? ④How did the fish react every time the old man moved the fish?
(1)Read for appreciation整合运用:本环节的设计是指向整合运用的应用实践类活动,学生根据语言材料所提供的语境、篇章结构、逻辑关系等特点赏析作品中老人的内心独白和作品的文字特征,进一步体会老人的性格特点与内心感受。教师由此引导学生了解海明威的写作风格,提高学生的文学鉴赏能力。教师提出如下问题帮助学生了解和理解海明威的写作风格。
T: How does Hemingway describe the old man? Does he use difficult words or complicated sentences? Why does he use plain words and simple sentences?
(1)Thinking and inferring推理判断:本环节的设计是指向推理判断的迁移创新类活动,教师通过下列问题引导学生深度思考主题意义,并根据已知信息合理推断出未知信息,从而提升学生的思维品质。
Q:What we can see on the surface are the old man’s struggles with the fish, but what if we think deeply? What do the old man, the fish and the sea actually symbolize?
S1: The old man had a strong belief, “A man can be destroyed, but not defeated.” It symbolizes the spirits of the tough man.
S2: The fish symbolizes our goals or dream.
S3: The sea is a symbol of our life or society.
(2)Thinking and sharing创造想象:本环节是指向创造想象的迁移创新类活动。通过阅读和赏析作品,教师教育学生将老人的硬汉精神和自己的学习、生活相关联,并即时对学生的世界观、人生观和价值观进行正确的引导。
活动设计如下:Please share your story of dealing with difficulties in your life or your study.
学生在教师的引领下,大胆地表达自己的观点。以一名同学的分享为例:

T: Good! Whatever difficulty we may meet in our life, we should have the spirits of the tough man.
