例如,第1单元课文Foreign Students at US Colleges Have Several Ways to Get Financial Aid 及其后面的练习,能较好地训练学生“概括中心思想、找出重要事实和细节”的阅读技能,而第10单元An Imminent Global Crisis及其后面的练习能较好地训练学生猜生词并评价作者态度。
又如,第1单元Learning in the United States 、第11单元The Best Time of My Life和第16单元Eating Custom and Practice等文章结构严谨,可向学生推荐作为范文进行模仿性写作。
(2)修改文章中的句子,将长句、难句改为简单句,帮助学生巩固语法知识,提高阅读理解的准确率。
例如,第4单元Sydney Opera House中第2句是个长句:A rough sketch of the possibilities of such a building by the architectural genius Jorn Utzon, submitted to an international competition in 1956, was initially almost ignored, but was eventually selected as the plan most suited to the site’s unique position on Bennelong Point. 该句主语是“A rough sketch”,有两个并列谓语,即:“was initially almost ignored”和“was eventually selected”,句中的介词短语“of the possibilities of such a building by the architectural genius Jorn Utzon”和过去分词短语“submitted to an international competition in 1956”做定语,修饰主语“A rough sketch”。此外,还有一个过去分词短语“most suited to the site’s unique position on Bennelong Point”做定语,修饰“the plan”。
