PAN-ASIAN relationships have been uneasy of late. Tensions remain between China and Japan over the issue of the Diaoyu Islands. There have also been territorial disputes in the South China Sea region, while the Yellow Sea has witnessed a build up of military exercises. Behind these regional issues, the specter of US involvement has been a constant threat.
