THE dominant position of English is being increasingly challenged by the advance of Spanish. The study of Spanish is soaring from Europe to Brazil to the US, according to experts in Spain. Spanish is spoken by more than 350 million people, making it the world's third language after Mandarin and English. The key languages of the future will be Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic in addition to English, according to a recent British Council study.
Popular crime writer takes top novel award

THE winners of the annual Arthur Ellis awards for Canadian crime writing were announced last Thursday. Barbara Fradkin's Fifth Son took the award for best novel published in 2004. This is the fourth novel in Fradkin's series featuring Ottawa police inspector Michael Green. The Arthur Ellis Awards, often called "The Canadian Edgars," are juried awards given annually since 1983 by Canada's national association of mystery-fiction writers.
