VIETNAMESE students' English skills are the lowest of all countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, says a report issued at the International Conference on Viet Nam Education, according to Viet Nam News. Vietnamese students study basic English in primary schools but the curriculum in high schools repeats beginning-level English. Many schools teach English as a normal subject without reinforcing learning by requiring the use of English as a medium of communication.

TEACHING English illegally in Republic of Korea could become a thing of the past following the government's decision to pay rewards for information leading to the arrest of foreign English teachers without proper authorization, reports EL Gazette. Robert Collins, an organizer with the Korean ESL Teachers' Union, describes the government's tactic as "ruthlessly effective", solving the illegal teaching problem through a strategy of "divide and rule".
