Young Indians strive for fluency in English

  ENGLISH is being spread in India by the world of work and young Indians are gearing up to meet the challenge of English, according to The Indian Express. An analysis by the Indian Retirement Earnings and Savings shows that more and more young earners in the age group 20 to 30 have at least a rudimentary ability to read English. About 35 per cent of the earners of India claim that they can read English, but only 16.5 per cent are confident enough to speak.

  
Story of homeless man wins Guardian Award

  ALEXANDER Masters has beaten a strong field to win the Guardian First Book Award for "Stuart: A Life Backwards", his biography of homeless man Stuart Shorter, reports The Guardian. The book tells Shorter's story in reverse ?his drug addiction, time spent in prison through to his abusive childhood. The Guardian First Book Award was launched in 1999 and replaced the Guardian Fiction Prize. The award aims to recognize and reward new writing across fiction and non-fiction.
