A REPORT on teacher quality released by the US National Centre for Education Statistics, finds that most teachers in the United States feel insecure about their ability to meet the challenges of US schools. Only 20 per cent feel very well prepared to help students from non-English speaking homes. More than half of teachers said their classes include students with limited English proficiency. In grades 9 to 12 (senior high school), 4 per cent of English and foreign language teachers had not majored in their subjects.
English debating contest in Japan

A TOTAL of 13 teams participated in the English Debate Competition for Adults organized by the English Speaking Union of Japan. Participants included businessmen and high school teachers of English. The first prize went to the team "Freshers!". The final round saw teams debating the issue of the 2016 Tokyo Olympics. The debate is intended to be an enjoyable opportunity for working people in Japan to exercise their English-language skills of persuasion.
