  THE "fun, vital and visually exciting" Space Search (a CD ROM for 9-10 year olds) has won the English Speaking Union (ESU) President's Award 2006. The judging panel described Space Search as "taking children to new imaginary worlds and allowing them to engage in learning through exploration whilst accommodating different learning styles and preferences." Space Search is a recent addition to a set of language teaching materials and it is designed to provide reinforcement language work using "story projects", which are based on stories that children can dramatize together. ESU is a British charity founded in 1918 to promote "international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language".

  
TESOL association launches jobs site

  TEACHERS of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), the leading English teachers' association in the United States, joins the webpage with the launch of its first online job service last month. TESOL says its new "Career Center", available at www.tesol.org, will offer job seekers free resume posting. TESOL Career Center is claimed to be one of the premier electronic recruitment resources for the industry. Employers and recruiters can access the qualified talent pool with relevant work experience to fulfill staffing needs. The service helps TESOL members connect with career opportunities worldwide.

  
US National Book Award winners announced

  RICHARD Powers' "The Echo Maker", a novel set in the small town of Kearney, Nebraska, US, has won the 57th US National Book Award for fiction. Set in Nebraska during the Platte River's massive spring flooding, this novel explores the power and limits of human intelligence. Powers is an American author whose eight previous novels have received numerous honours. Timothy Egan's "The Worst Hard Time," a history of the Dust Bowl that turned the American heartland into a barren wasteland during the height of the Depression, was named the winner of the award for nonfiction.
