FRENCH Minister of Economy Christine Lagarde was recently awarded the “English Doormat” prize for her perceived assault on the French language. Lagarde’s crime was her communication with subordinates in English. The prize is awarded each year to the person from the “French elite” who has shown a particular “determination to promote the domination of Anglo-American in France to the detriment of the French language”.

ANNA Prime, the author of a 1,400-word poem about teaching English in Spain, was named the winner of the inaugural Suzanne Furstner Foundation scholarship. Prime won a four-week Cambridge Celta (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) course and a two-week language course in Spain. The Suzanne Furstner Foundation is a project supporting language and educational training across the world.
