US news agency Associated Press (AP) is to sell its French language service to a group led by former Agence France-Presse chief executive with the financial backing of French investment group Bollore. The new agency would have a license to translate AP’s English language stories. The finalization of the deal is subject to the compulsory consultation of AP French staff representatives.

ACCORDING to the legislation to be published in the new year, immigrants who want to become Irish citizens will have to pass a language test. The legislation requires applicants demonstrate “reasonable competence” for communicating in English or Irish. At present, immigrants can apply for citizenship without any language requirement if they have been living in Ireland for five years.
