Jingxi’s immediate ancestors include regional folk songs, local dialects, clapper opera, and a musical system called pihuang.”从上文内容我们可以十分清楚地了解到西方人更熟悉的“Peking Opera”显然是指京戏或京剧,而非“北京歌剧”。因此,认为京剧译为“Peking Opera”是对京剧的“背叛”之说显然不太恰当。
“约定俗成”(accepted through common practice)是专有名词音译的原则之一。有许多流行很久的译名虽然违背了“名从主人”(named after the original sounds)的原则,但因其早已被世人公认,我们还是不应轻易对其进行改动。例如,英国作家笔下的大侦探Holmes中文名译为“福尔摩斯”,这个译名在中国家喻户晓,如果我们按照标准读音将其译为“霍姆斯”,符合了“名从主人”的原则,但效果又会如何呢?
