基于《二十一世纪学生英文报》的特点，笔者从不同栏目中筛选了主题相近的文章，将其置于同一课时，并拟定了课时题目。例如，在校本教材Chapter 5 Our World （时事之窗）第二课时中，选自《二十一世纪学生英文报》的两篇文章内容分别是短视频平台的社会影响和高铁霸座的不文明现象，二者均为对社会热点现象的评析。笔者将本课时的题目拟为Lesson 2 Social Phenomena （社会现象）。学生通过阅读主题相近的文章，不会因为话题不同而造成阅读思维的跳跃和不连续。通过长期训练，学生可实现在自主阅读的过程中，依据兴趣爱好，对报刊阅读资源进行筛选整合，关注社会热点，提升思辨能力，这符合提升学生阅读素养的要求。
